Moving Forward on Health Care: We Won't Go Back!

March 23rd marks the one year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act being signed into law. Some in Congress want to take away the consumer and patient protections in the law and put the insurance companies back in charge.

We urge you, our elected officials, to fully implement the Affordable Care Act.  We won't go back on health care!

My husband works in a career peripheral to the health care system and has seen WAY TOO MUCH of what the For-Profit Juggernaut has done to the entire system. We currently pay our doctors to keep us sick. We currently do not pay ourselves to be well. We are hostages to someone else’s pocketbook while people go without the care they need and deserve. WHY would we keep that?

As a self-employed graphic designer who has been buying my own individual health insurance for the last 18 years, I’ve watched my premiums skyrocket from $900/year in 1993 to $4800/year in 2010. And that’s straight off the preferred rate sheet on the same policy. This is unsustainable. With the Big Insurance monopolies and pre-existing condition exclusions (until 2014), these companies don’t have customers; they have hostages. The Affordable Care Act at least begins to give Americans — especially individuals, families and small businesses — some leverage and protection against the power and abuses of Big Insurance. We cannot go backwards.
